I started sailing at 8 months (proof available on request) but had to wait for a few years before being allowed to go solo.  As the son of a designer, builder, and restorer, boats have always been a part of Life. Childhood summers were mostly spent at the sailing club, with a trip to Cowes Week every year because, well, why not? Although born in the US, my mother moved to the UK when I was 5 and I didn't return to the States until I was 29.

Early career choices were inconclusive, and the jump to design came when Southampton College of Technology (now Solent University) in Southampton, UK, advertised that it had vacancies in its Yacht and Boat Design course.  Three years later, with a diploma under my arm, I started work for a firm of commercial Naval Architects, working on tugs, workboats, tankers, etc. as well as developing a Ship Loading Calculator for on-board use.

My father's death in 1983 precipitated a move back to the US that had me back on yacht design, rather than working boats.  Since moving in 1984, I've worked with many of the top local designers in Newport, as well as a spell as Engineering Manager for Goetz Custom Boats in Bristol, RI and then Legacy Yachts in Portsmouth, RI.

During the years with other designers I worked on the design of almost every type of vessel imaginable, from Open 60 yachts to an electrically-powered pump-out boat and a 65' traditionally-styled yawl.

As a self-employed designer, I have drawn various sailing yachts, including the 40' Open Class boat "Wind of Change" boats, one of which competed in the Around Alone in 2004 with Viktor Yazykov.

My concept designs, developed at home while employed elsewhere, form the bulk of this website.  As concepts, they are really just thoughts or outlines that can be fleshed out with many changes, or just a few. They are also talking points for your own design, and reflect my tastes and design philosophy.
